Gone Surfin’

Welcome to the weekend, friends! As you’re reading this, I’m on my way to El Salvador for the next seven days, working on my tan, riding warm-water waves, and drinking cheap beer like it’s going out of style.

I’m also going to try to get out of my own head for a bit, give myself a break from cooking and a liiiittle break from the book, though it’s a great feeling knowing that the finish line is finally within sight. (One more month until my manuscript is due! But I think the real work really begins after that.)

What I love about these tropical getaways is how you can pack so much yet pack so little. Everything I need for my first day or two fits neatly inside my stylie new silver Klettersack: a breezy tank and my favorite pair of cutoffs, a Mara Hoffman rashguard for surfing, bikinis and homemade sunscreen, a Turkish pestemal (my favorite kind of beach towel β€” so light and quick-drying), and an outfit for going out at night. My new OM-D E-M1 camera arrived just in time for me to bring on this trip, so I’ll be passing time on the flight fidgeting with all the settings! So far, I’m loving it.

It might be a little quiet around here for the next week or so, but you can follow along on Instagram for some snaps from my trip. Until then, have an awesome week/end!

  • Hi Linda, I am curious about your homemade sunscrean – are you maybe planning to blog about it? I used to buy Welleda (European organic brand) but it is no longer available. Now I can’t really find any I like.
    Have a great time surfing!

How do you make your own sunblock and who takes care of your garden while you are traveling?

    • I make a zinc-based sunscreen with beeswax, oils, and butters. This was a girls’ getaway, so my husband held down the homefront all week (but when we’re both away, we have a housesitter who takes care of the garden).

I’d love if you shared your recipe for the sunblock!

        • Unfortunately, I’m not comfortable sharing the recipe because I don’t know what the actual SPF is (it can’t be determined without a lab test) and I’d hate for someone to get a sunburn if it wasn’t mixed correctly.
